Avert the Worst Impacts of Climate Change
Navigation
A failure to act on climate change will "Result in an intergenerational injustice, with our children and grandchildren scorning our generation for ignoring the climate change threat – with moral outrage." ~Anthony Costello, UCL Institute for Global Health |
The effects of climate change are profound and far-reaching. Learning the hard way that we can't separate the economy from the ecological systems that support it, climate change, perhaps the greatest challenge and threat humanity has ever faced, has been left largely unchecked by world leaders to continue unabated threatening the basis of civilization itself. Scientists have high confidence that global temperatures will continue to rise by up to 11.5°F by the end of the century if we fail to reduce emissions from burning fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas, with dry regions becoming drier and wet regions becoming wetter. This rise in average temperature will have far-reaching effects on the earth's climate patterns and on all living things. Many of these changes have already begun. With this rise comes potentially devastating impacts for human society, biodiversity and the stability and health of the natural world we depend on and cherish. The scientific consensus is unequivocal: human activities are causing climate change. Every national academy of science of every major country in the world agrees. Every professional scientific society in every field related to the field of climate endorses it. 97-98 percent of all scientists that are most active in publishing in the field of climate science agree with it. Setting tough limits on global emissions of greenhouse gases could prevent 20-65% of the damaging effects of climate change by 2100 (see also | view study) while advancing economic growth, creating jobs and improving America's energy security. According to the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis and common sense, limiting climate change to target levels will become much more difficult to achieve, and more expensive, if action is not taken soon. Unless we act now, our children will inherit a hotter world, dirtier air and water, more severe droughts, floods, wildfires, extreme weather, a massive loss of biodiversity, ecosystems in peril and a destabilized climate. "The benefits of reducing greenhouse gas emissions outweigh the costs by trillions of dollars. Combining the results of the report by the German Institute of Economic Research and Watkiss et al. 2005 studies, we find that the total cost of climate action (cost plus damages) in 2100 is approximately $12 trillion, while the cost of inaction (just damages) is approximately $20 trillion." ~Skeptical Science | Click to enlarge
